Tibet is located on the northern side of the Himalayas, north of India, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar (Burma) on the barren tableland of the Tibetan Plateau, the world's highest region with an average altitude of more than 4,000 m above sea level. Since China's "Peaceful Liberation of Tibet" in 1949-50, the region is de facto an administrative division of the People's Republic of China, known as the Xizang Autonomous Region.
