Country Profile

Pitcairn is a group of five islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, of which one is inhabited, it is the last remaining British colony in the Pacific. It is supposed that Polynesians lived on Pitcairn, but when Spanish explorers in the 15th century discovered the island it was uninhabited. In 1790 Pitcairn was settled by the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions. Nearly 50 years later it became the first British Pacific island colony in 1838.
